Biography
Jenifer Shafer, Ph.D., is the inaugural Ben L. Fryrear Presidential Chair in Energy and Professor at the Colorado School of Mines, where her appointment spans Chemistry and Nuclear Engineering. From 2020 to 2026, she served as Program Director and later Associate Director for Technology at ARPA-E, the Department of Energy's agency for transformational energy technologies, where her portfolio spanned advanced nuclear, critical minerals, industrial decarbonization, grid systems, and batteries. Her research program focuses on radiochemistry, actinide chemistry, molten salt electrochemistry, and nuclear fuel cycle separations, with approximately 90 publications and sustained DOE and NSF funding. She is a recipient of the DOE Early Career Award and a Fellow of the American Chemical Society. At Mines, she works at the intersection of nuclear energy, critical minerals, and the workforce and infrastructure needed to scale next-generation energy systems.
