Biography
Dr. Joe Hoagland has spent a career stewarding critical nuclear capabilities for the nation, and now leads Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Fusion and Fission Energy and Science Directorate, which resides at the very epicenter of nuclear innovation. He first joined the Lab in 2025 as Director of Special Initiatives, working to position ORNL for emerging opportunities and key partnerships. With more than 30 years of experience at the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), Hoagland was instrumental in driving critical initiatives in nuclear and coal combustion strategies, and various new technology deployments within the TVA region. An adjunct professor at the Howard Baker School for Public Policy and Chair of the State of Tennessee’s Energy Policy Council, he holds a doctorate and master’s degrees from Washington State University in physical chemistry and a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Southern Utah University.
