Biography
Umair Zia is an electric utility executive with two decades of experience leading engineering, operations, and grid modernization initiatives across the power industry. As Vice President of Transmission and Distribution System Performance Management at the Long Island Power Authority, he oversees electric system operations, control center performance, and strategic modernization and innovation programs serving more than 1.2 million customers. Throughout his career, including leadership roles at Eversource Energy and Potomac Electric Power Company, he has focused on improving reliability, resiliency, and operational performance while implementing emerging technologies, distributed energy resources, with a focus on customer needs and affordability. An IEEE Senior Member, adjunct professor, published author, and active industry contributor, Umair is recognized for his collaborative leadership style and ability to connect strategy, operations, technology, and workforce development. His work emphasizes practical innovation and the thoughtful application of new technologies to support a reliable, resilient, and customer-focused electric grid.
